Teaching your puppy to walk nicely beside you (also called “loose leash walking” or “heel walking”) is a great skill that helps build trust and makes outdoor adventures safe and enjoyable!
Step 1: Start Indoors
- Begin in a quiet place inside your home with no distractions.
- Clip on a light leash and let your pup get used to it.
- Hold a small treat near your leg and say, “Let’s go!”
Step 2: Use a Cue Word
- Pick a cue like “Heel” or “Close.”
- Say it calmly and start walking slowly.
- When your puppy walks beside your leg—even for a second—praise and give a treat.
Step 3: Practice Short Distances
- Walk 3–4 steps, then stop and reward if your pup stays close.
- Keep sessions short (2–5 minutes) but frequent during the day.
Step 4: Reward Good Behavior
- Always reward your puppy when they stay beside you with a loose leash.
- Don’t pull the leash—guide them with treats and your voice.
Step 5: Go Outside Slowly
- Move to a quiet outdoor area once your pup is doing well indoors.
- Use the same cue and keep rewards ready.
- Ignore pulling—simply stop walking and wait for your pup to return beside you.
Step 6: Be Consistent
- Practice daily at the same time.
- Always walk at your pace—don’t let your pup lead.
- Stay calm and patient. Puppies learn through repetition and positive energy.
